Book Review: Bad Summer People

Bad Summer People by Emma Rosenblum.

Thank you to Flatiron Books for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Book Synopsis

A whip-smart, propulsive debut about infidelity, backstabbing, and murderous intrigue, set against an exclusive summer haven on Fire Island.

None of them would claim to be a particularly good person. But who among them is actually capable of murder?

Jen Weinstein and Lauren Parker rule the town of Salcombe, Fire Island every summer. They hold sway on the beach and the tennis court, and are adept at manipulating people to get what they want. Their husbands, Sam and Jason, have summered together on the island since childhood, despite lifelong grudges and numerous secrets. Their one single friend, Rachel Woolf, is looking to meet her match, whether he's the tennis pro-or someone else's husband. But even with plenty to gossip about, this season starts out as quietly as any other.

Until a body is discovered, face down off the side of the boardwalk.

Stylish, subversive and darkly comedic, this is a story of what's lurking under the surface of picture-perfect lives in a place where everyone has something to hide.

My Review

Bad Summer People is told in alternating chapters switching between different narrators with each chapter and each chapter introduces a different character, or sometimes two characters, and this is how the reader learns about each character and discovers more about them as they get further into the reading. The novel is divided into five parts.

I found that there were a lot of characters to remember with this book. I also feel that each time I picked the book back up to read some more I had to recall who was married to who and how some of the characters were connected to each other to understand what was happening and how it related to everything else going on.

This book is a short read, and therefore, I was expecting it to feel more fast paced when I was reading it. When I put it down for a bit or for that day, I didn't feel overly tempted to pick it back up too soon to read more. This is a juicy, gossip fueled read and a mildly entertaining book that is good for summer, but I suggest reading it in one sitting if you can. It may be easier to keep the many characters straight in your head while reading if you do.

My Rating: 3/5
