Book Review: Mexican Gothic

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Book Synopsis

He is trying to poison me.

You must come for me, Noemí.

You have to save me.

After receiving a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside, unsure what she will find.

Noemí is an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, more suited to cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough, smart, and not afraid: not of her cousin’s new English husband, a stranger who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemí’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Noemí's only ally in this inhospitable place is the family’s youngest son. But he too may be hiding something dark. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. as Noemí discovers when she begins to unearth stories of violence and madness.

Mesmerized by this terrifying yet seductive world, Noemí may soon find it impossible to save her cousin—or even escape this enigmatic house.

My Review

This book is not typically a genre that I chose to read. I have had this book on my shelf to read for quite a while and what encouraged me to pick it up at this time was the fact that it was chosen as one of the five books in the shortlist for the Canada Reads 2023 debates happening this week, from March 27 - 30.

When I was reading this book I really felt how much the house was written to stand out as a character in the story. I found this novel to be very setting focused and the authors descriptions of the house and the setting were very immersive. I felt like I was right there with Noemi experiencing the house and the eerie happenings just as she was experiencing them.

I really noted the dramatic change in Noemi from when she first arrived at High Place through to the end of the book when she very much felt like a heroine of the story and how brave she became as I read.

I look forward to reading more books by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and I currently have a copy of Velvet Was The Night, Gods Of Jade And Shadow, and The Daughter Of Doctor Moreau on my bookshelf. I have ordered a copy of The Beautiful Ones.

My Rating: 4/5
