Book Review: The Flatshare

The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary

Synopsis

What if your roommate is your soul mate? A joyful, quirky romantic comedy, Beth O'Leary's The Flatshare is a feel-good novel about finding love in the most unexpected of ways.

Tiffy and Leon share an apartment. Tiffy and Leon have never met.

After a bad breakup, Tiffy Moore needs a place to live. Fast. And cheap. But the apartments in her budget have her wondering if astonishingly colored mold on the walls counts as art.

Desperation makes her open minded, so she answers an ad for a flatshare. Leon, a night shift worker, will take the apartment during the day, and Tiffy can have it nights and weekends. He'll only ever be there when she's at the office. In fact, they'll never even have to meet.

Tiffy and Leon start writing each other notes - first about what day is garbage day, and politely establishing what leftovers are up for grabs, and the evergreen question of whether the toilet seat should stay up or down. Even though they are opposites, they soon become friends. And then maybe more.

But falling in love with your roommate is probably a terrible idea...especially if you've never met.

My Review

It took me a bit to get into the flow of this book as the author chose to write the narrator who was talking at the start of what they were saying. For example, if the chapter was narrated by Leon, then when he was speaking you would see Me: ........ then in the next line, Tiffy: ........... and vice versa for the chapters narrated by Tiffy.

Once I got into the flow of the writing, I enjoyed the book, and I appreciated the epilogue at the end of the book. A very romantic ending to this rom-com book. I look forward to reading more by this author as overall, The Flatshare was an enjoyable read. I am curious to see how the writing style in other books by Beth O'Leary compares to this book.

I watched the 6 episode series adaptation on Paramount Plus. I only had the subscription long enough to watch the series after reading the book.

My thoughts on the series: I felt like they jumped right into the story without any sort of lead up to the flatshare situation. There was some changes with characters from the book. In the book, Tiffany is a book editor, whereas in the series she is a writer for an online magazine.

My Rating: 3.5/5
