Book Review: Happiness For Beginners

Happiness For Beginners by Katherine Center.

My Thoughts

Happiness For Beginners is the first book I have read by Katherine Center. I really enjoyed the writing style and the way the characters personalities came through strongly in the writing. I felt the emotions of the main characters - Helen and Jake - really leapt off the page when reading. This book made me feel lots and also made me laugh. This book is very much about forgiving yourself and others and moving on from mistakes and bad decisions made in the past. This book is also about family and bonds between siblings and is very much a friends to lovers style romance novel. The romance is definitely a component, but is certainly not the main focus of this novel.

I watched the Netflix adaptation the next day after I finished reading and although they changed the sequence of some (minor) events in the book and also characters, generally speaking aside from changing a bit of the ending, they followed the story pretty close to the book. I will say, I did enjoy the book more. I will say that Ellie Kemper and Luke Grimes were excellent casting choices for the roles of Helen and Jake. I feel they really brought the characters I was introduced to in the book to life in this film.

I definitely look forward to reading all of the books by Katherine which are sitting in a stack on my bookshelf - What You Wish For, Things You Save In A Fire, How To Walk Away, Hello Stranger, and The Bodyguard.

My Rating: 5/5
