Book Review: The Hating Game

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

Synopsis

Soon to Be a Major Motion Picture!

USA Today Bestseller!

Debut author Sally Thorne bursts on the scene with a hilarious and sexy workplace comedy all about that thin, fine line between hate and love.

Nemesis (n.) 1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome; 2) A person’s undoing; 3) Joshua Templeman.

Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. Hate. And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude.

Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.

My Thoughts

I found this book to be an okay read. I enjoyed it enough to read through to the end, although given that it is a rom-com, we already generally know how it will end. Kinda like the way all the rom-com genre movies seem all the same. Once you have seen one, you have seen them all.

This book has several rom-com cliches and there are a couple of things about this book I didn't particularly appreciate. The way the book focused on the appearance of the main characters in the book - Lucy's shorter height compared to that of Josh, the objectification of Josh and his body type and the way the book focused more on this and the back and forth angst and push and pull between the two of them. I also found parts of the dialogue and bits of the novel to be repetitive, which I feel was unnecessary and didn't really serve a purpose, but to frustrate the reader.

There were a couple elements of the story plot that were mentioned and then got sidelined and didn't get resolved for the reader. Josh's career future was tied together at the end, but what happened with Lucy?

I have had this book on my shelf for a while and I have downloaded the movie on Itunes so I can watch it after reading and I will still watch it so I can compare the two.

My Rating: 3/5
